You don’t need a success story. You need a map.
Here’s the truth: You don’t need to be famous. You don’t need to have “made it.” You don’t need a book deal or a viral moment. You just need to understand your own story.
Because whether you’re building a brand, a business, or just trying to figure out what’s next, the clues are already there. In your past. In your values. In your messiest middle.
The trick? Knowing how to read the map.
I call it taking inventory.
Your brand doesn’t start with a photoshoot or a fancy website. It starts with your lived experience.
That includes:
The industries you’ve been in
The conversations people always come to you for
The failures that taught you more than any job ever did <3
The obsessions you can’t stop talking about
The work you’ve done that no one ever saw
The invisible threads between it all
I use a simple story-mapping exercise with my clients to pull it out. You plot the timeline of your life, not just your career, but the whole story. The detours. The heartbreaks. The turning points. The risks.
➡️ Then we look for patterns, skills, themes, and truths that keep showing up.
And when you do that, something wild happens: You stop feeling lost. You start seeing a thread. You start to understand: Oh. This is who I am. This is what I’m building toward.
“But, I’m not successful yet.”
Good. That means you’re building something honest. The best time to map your story is in the middle. Not when it’s all wrapped in a bow.
Because when you understand your past and own your present, you’re able to shape your future with intention.
This is how you futureproof your brand.
Not by pretending to be done. But by showing that you’re becoming something real.
Ps. You don't have to share your entire story with anyone else. But you do need to see it clearly for yourself. Sometimes that can be hard. Writing it down, or actually drawing a timeline can help.
Or, if you feel comfortable - ask a friend to come over and tell them your story. Then ask them to tell you what common themes they see.
You could also use AI to help you through this exercise. Let me know how it goes, and if you need help!
